Many people have the same dental provider for decades. They start when they are children and continue with the same dentist well into adulthood. Then, one day, situations change. The dentist announces their retirement or perhaps you move to a new city and look for a more convenient office. Identifying a new dental provider is a big decision. Whom do you trust with your dental care?
The truth is, every dentist graduates with a "Doctor" title. Since dentistry is a blend of ART and science, some dentists have MORE of a natural talent for the "ART" part than others. Their work looks very natural and lifelike. So you are now asking the question, "How do I identify these dentists?"
The answer is, pay attention to the clues:
1) They answer the office telephone with a friendly voice and DON'T immediately put you on HOLD.
2) Their office is CLEAN and well kept. Modern is nice but condition overall says more.
3) The Doctor welcomes you and looks genuinely happy to meet you.
4) The BEST Doctors should never RUSH you. This is unfortunately common in "insurance-based" dental offices. (Doctors are usually required to highly discount their treatment under insurance contracts, to the point where they have to see 4X as many patients in the same day, to be able to keep the lights on and pay their employees. Patients have often reported to us that they felt "rushed" and worried about the quality of their dental treatment, in the past.)
5) The BEST Doctors take very clear x-rays and photographs of your teeth and are able to SHOW it to you. (What is that old saying? "One picture is worth a thousand words?") It's way easier to trust someone new, when you can actually see what they are talking about, with your own eyes!
6) They DISCUSS your situation and provide OPTIONS for the treatment. They give you an opportunity to ASK questions, so you feel comfortable that you understand the issues. They give you a clear treatment plan, complete with the financial investment required.
7) They clearly discuss payment arrangements, insurance reimbursements and may offer financing options (to make the treatment easier to afford).
8) They don't pressure you into making a decision, NOW! They allow you to begin treatment when YOU are ready.
9) MOST IMPORTANT, you feel comfortable in their office (yes, I know, no one ever feels REALLY comfortable at the dentist, LOL) and you are able to place some trust that they are going to take good CARE of you.
10) Finally, they have a 24/7 LIVE answering service, so you CAN reach the Doctor, if a problem arises after office hours. (Answering machines and voicemail make everyone wonder WHEN they will get that return call.)

Since 1994, I've helped thousands of people to achieve better oral health. After graduating from New York University Dental School at the top of my class, I felt drawn towards the principles of Holistic Dentistry. Recent studies have proven the "Oral Systemic Link". This means that diseases in the mouth have been definitely associated with a number of other health conditions, including heart disease and diabetes. YES, even BAD BREATH could mean you're developing other health issues (which may need to be discussed with your physician). The good news is; if you find out early, it can be treated.
